What Is a Packaged HVAC Unit?

A packaged HVAC unit combines the compressor, condenser coil, evaporator coil, blower, and (in gas packs) furnace section into a single outdoor cabinet. Instead of the indoor air handler plus outdoor condenser layout used in a split system, the entire system sits on a slab next to the house or on the roof of a small commercial building, and conditioned air is ducted in and out of the structure.

The three configurations we install most often:

  • Gas pack - air conditioner plus gas furnace in one cabinet. The most common configuration for manufactured homes in Walker County.
  • Packaged heat pump - heat pump for both heating and cooling, no separate gas furnace. Good fit for milder East Texas winters.
  • Packaged AC + electric heat - cooling-only with electric resistance heat strips. Used where natural gas is not available.

When a Packaged Unit Is the Right Call

Packaged systems make sense when a split-system layout is impractical, expensive, or impossible. The most common scenarios we see across East Texas:

  • Mobile and manufactured homes. Almost all factory-built homes are configured for a packaged unit. Belly ducts, side-supply registers, and the lack of an attic to mount an air handler all point to a packaged installation.
  • Slab-on-grade homes with no attic. Older Walker County and San Jacinto County builds often have no attic space tall enough to hold a horizontal air handler.
  • Small commercial buildings. Restaurants, retail strips, and offices in Huntsville and Madisonville commonly use rooftop packaged units (RTUs) for the same footprint and serviceability reasons.
  • Tight residential lots. A single curb-side cabinet beats a split system with both indoor and outdoor footprints when ground space is at a premium.

Packaged Units We Install - Armstrong Air

As an Armstrong Air Pro Team Dealer, we install Armstrong's packaged-unit lineup most often. Three models cover almost every East Texas use case:

Armstrong PRPGE16

16 SEER2 Gas Pack

Gas-heat and electric-cool packaged unit. The PRPGE16 is the go-to replacement for manufactured-home gas packs in Walker, Madison, and Leon Counties. R-454B refrigerant compliant for the 2025 transition.

Armstrong PCE7

Packaged Air Conditioner with Electric Heat

Cooling plus electric resistance heat strips. PCE7 fits properties without natural gas service and is common in San Jacinto County and rural Madison County installations.

Armstrong PHP17

17 SEER2 Packaged Heat Pump

All-electric heating and cooling in one cabinet. The PHP17 is a strong replacement option for homes where gas is unavailable or where the homeowner prefers heat pump operation for lower heating costs in mild East Texas winters.

We also install non-Armstrong packaged units on request when matching an existing line or when the customer has a specific brand preference. Bring your existing nameplate photos to the consultation and we will quote like-for-like and an Armstrong alternative side by side.

Our Packaged Unit Installation Process

Every installation follows the same documented seven-step process:

  1. Manual J load calculation. We size the new unit by calculating the heating and cooling load for your specific square footage, insulation, window count, and orientation - not by guessing from the size of the old unit.
  2. EPA 608 refrigerant recovery. Existing R-410A (or R-22 on older units) is recovered using EPA-certified equipment, never vented. We hand you the recovery documentation.
  3. Old cabinet removal and disposal. The outgoing unit, gas line, and electrical connections are disconnected and removed. The condensate drain is capped or rerouted.
  4. Pad / curb prep. Slab leveling, hurricane tie-downs (mobile-home installations), or rooftop curb adapter as the situation requires.
  5. New unit set, ducts reconnected. The packaged cabinet is set, secured, and the supply / return duct collars are reconnected with mastic and tape. Existing duct leakage gets flagged for repair.
  6. Refrigerant, electrical, and gas commissioning. Refrigerant charge verified (factory pre-charge plus line-set top-off as needed), gas line pressure tested, electrical disconnect installed to current code, thermostat wired and configured.
  7. Startup, walkthrough, and paperwork. System run, supply / return temperatures recorded, customer walkthrough on filter access and thermostat settings. Manufacturer registration filed by us. You get a written invoice and warranty packet before we leave.

Service Areas for Packaged Unit Installation

We install packaged HVAC units throughout our East Texas service area:

Pricing, Financing, and Rebates

Packaged-unit pricing depends on capacity (3, 4, or 5 ton), efficiency rating, fuel type (gas pack vs. heat pump vs. straight AC), and the scope of pad, ductwork, or electrical work the existing installation requires. We provide a written, line-item estimate at every quote so you can see exactly what is included.

Armstrong Air manufacturer rebates run periodically through the year on qualifying packaged units. Financing is available through our finance partners with options from same-as-cash to extended-term plans. See our financing page or call 936-661-9123 to talk through options before you decide.
