Why Regular HVAC Maintenance Matters in Texas

Texas summer heat puts air conditioning systems under more load than almost any other climate in the continental U.S. Most Walker County homes run their AC from late March through October, which adds up to 6+ months of near-continuous service every year. A skipped tune-up shows up in three predictable ways.

  • Capacity loss. Dirty coils, low refrigerant charge, and worn capacitors quietly drop cooling output until the system runs constantly to reach the thermostat setpoint.
  • Higher utility bills. A system running at 80 percent capacity uses more energy to do the same work. Annual maintenance keeps efficiency closer to the factory rating.
  • Premature failure. Most major AC repairs (compressor lockouts, blower burnouts, ductwork pressure damage) trace back to small problems that were detectable at a tune-up months earlier.

The 2025 R-454B refrigerant transition makes maintenance even more important for older R-410A systems. Many R-410A parts are now legacy stock, and a small refrigerant leak found at a tune-up costs far less to address on your schedule than during an August breakdown.

What's Included in a Ginsel Maintenance Plan

The Ginsel Heating & Air maintenance plan covers the year-round work every Huntsville-area system needs:

  • Annual cooling-season AC tune-up (refrigerant pressure check, coil inspection, electrical components, capacitor and contactor test, condensate drain flush, filter check)
  • Annual heating-season furnace or heat pump tune-up (gas valve, ignitor, heat exchanger inspection, blower motor amp draw, defrost cycle test for heat pumps)
  • Priority customer scheduling during peak season
  • 24-hour emergency service availability for plan members
  • Discounted parts and labor on repairs between visits
  • Inflation protection on the annual plan price
  • Transferable agreement if you sell your home
  • Documented service history kept on file for warranty claims and resale disclosure

The plan covers central AC, gas furnaces, heat pumps, ductless mini-splits, and packaged units. Commercial maintenance plans for rooftop units, walk-in coolers, and commercial refrigeration are quoted separately.

Cooling-Season AC Tune-Up: What We Check

Each cooling-season tune-up includes a documented multi-point inspection. The technician walks you through the findings before they leave and files a written report.

  1. Refrigerant pressure and superheat / subcool readings
  2. Outdoor condenser coil cleaning
  3. Indoor evaporator coil inspection
  4. Capacitor microfarad test (capacitors lose strength gradually before they fail)
  5. Contactor inspection for pitting and burn marks
  6. Blower motor amp draw vs. nameplate rating
  1. Condensate drain flush and float-switch test
  2. Filter check and replacement recommendation
  3. Thermostat calibration check
  4. Refrigerant line insulation inspection
  5. Disconnect box and breaker inspection
  6. Written R-454B transition recommendation if your system is older R-410A

If we measure a slow refrigerant loss, we hand you a written recommendation for next steps: repair the leak, top off the charge, or plan an R-454B replacement on your timeline rather than during an emergency.

Heating-Season Tune-Up: What We Check

Fall heating tune-ups happen on a separate visit so we can catch any weak component before the first cold night:

  • Heat exchanger inspection (gas furnaces; CO leak risk)
  • Gas valve operation and manifold pressure
  • Ignitor and flame sensor cleaning
  • Burner inspection
  • Blower wheel cleaning and belt tension
  • Defrost cycle and reversing valve operation (heat pumps)
  • Auxiliary heat strip current draw (heat pumps)
  • Combustion air supply check

Texas furnaces run far fewer hours than equipment in northern markets, but the cold snaps that do hit Walker County tend to expose any weak component instantly. A November tune-up leaves time to order parts before the system is called on under load.

Plan Member Benefits Beyond Tune-Ups

  • Priority scheduling. When the office is booked solid during a July heat wave, plan members move to the front of the queue.
  • Repair discount. Plan members get a member rate on parts and labor between visits, not just on the tune-up itself.
  • No after-hours surcharge on plan-member emergency calls during the season your covered equipment is running.
  • Locked-in renewal pricing. Inflation protection keeps your renewal rate flat as long as the plan stays active.
  • Warranty advocacy. If a manufacturer warranty claim is needed, our documented service history streamlines it. For Armstrong Air systems we installed, this is built in.
  • Transferable. Selling your home? The remaining months transfer to the buyer at closing, which is a useful line on a home inspection report.

What Happens if Something Breaks Between Visits

Plan members get a single phone number, priority routing, and the same Ginsel technician who already knows the equipment. Here is the process:

  1. Call 936-661-9123 and identify yourself as a plan member.
  2. If we are open (Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM), you go to the top of the dispatch queue.
  3. If it is after hours, the on-call technician returns the call within the response window stated in your plan agreement.
  4. On arrival, the technician pulls up your maintenance file, runs a focused diagnostic, and gives you a written estimate before doing the repair.
  5. Plan-member repair discounts apply automatically. If the system is under manufacturer warranty (Armstrong Air systems installed by us usually are), we handle the parts claim directly.

HVAC Maintenance Plan Pricing

Plan pricing depends on the number and type of systems covered, the property type (residential vs. commercial), and whether you bundle multiple service addresses. Call 936-661-9123 for a quote tailored to your home or business. New customers can lock in current pricing on a single phone call and have the first tune-up scheduled within the same week during the off-peak shoulder months.

Financing is also available for major repairs and replacements through our finance partners. Visit our financing page for details.

How to Enroll in the Ginsel Maintenance Plan

Enrolling takes about ten minutes. Call us at 936-661-9123, request your first cooling-season tune-up, and we will set up the plan during that visit. We bring the paperwork; you pick the renewal month and the contact-on-file for scheduling.

Maintenance Plan FAQs

How often does Ginsel come out for the maintenance plan?

The standard plan includes two visits per year: a cooling-season AC tune-up in spring or early summer and a heating-season furnace or heat pump tune-up in the fall. Plan members can also call for unlimited diagnostic visits between scheduled tune-ups at discounted member pricing.

What if I have more than one AC system?

Multi-system homes are covered. Each system gets its own documented tune-up. Plan pricing depends on the number of systems and equipment type - call 936-661-9123 for a quote on your specific setup.

Does the plan cover refrigerant if my AC is low?

A small top-off is included; larger refrigerant charges and leak repairs are billed at the member discount rate. We do not recommend chasing a refrigerant leak with annual top-offs; the tune-up visit is the right time to find and fix the source.

How much does the Ginsel maintenance plan cost?

Plan pricing depends on the number and type of systems covered. Call 936-661-9123 to get a quote for your home. Multi-system, commercial, and rental-property plans are quoted separately.

Is the maintenance plan transferable if I sell my home?

Yes. The remaining months of the plan transfer to the new homeowner at closing. Many sellers find this is a useful detail on the seller's disclosure and home inspection report.

Does the plan cover commercial HVAC equipment?

Commercial systems are quoted separately because requirements vary by property type. We cover rooftop units, walk-in coolers, ice machines, and commercial refrigeration. Call for a commercial maintenance quote.
